Resolution & Panel Technology

Resolution
The number of pixels on a screen, expressed as width × height (e.g., 1920×1080). More pixels generally means sharper images, but screen size and viewing distance matter equally.
4K (UHD)
Ultra High Definition — roughly 3840×2160 pixels, four times the pixel count of 1080p HD.
OLED
Organic Light-Emitting Diode. Each pixel produces its own light, enabling true blacks and high contrast ratios. Common in premium TVs and smartphones.
QLED
Quantum Light-Emitting Diode. An LCD panel enhanced with a quantum-dot filter for improved color volume and brightness compared to standard LCD.
LCD
Liquid Crystal Display. Requires a separate backlight. The most widely used display technology across TVs, monitors, and phones.
IPS
In-Plane Switching — an LCD subtype offering wider viewing angles and accurate colors, popular in monitors and tablets.
Refresh Rate (Hz)
How many times per second the screen updates its image. 60 Hz suits everyday use; 120 Hz or higher reduces motion blur for gaming or fast video.
HDR (High Dynamic Range)
A standard that expands the range between the darkest and brightest parts of an image. HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HLG are common formats — not all are equally capable.
Nits
A unit of screen brightness. Higher nit values help screens remain readable in daylight; HDR content typically benefits from 600+ nits.
PPI (Pixels Per Inch)
Pixel density — the number of pixels packed into one inch of screen. Higher PPI produces sharper text and images at a given screen size.

Resolution

The total number of pixels on a display, expressed as width × height. Higher resolution means more detail, but the benefit depends on screen size and typical viewing distance.

OLED

Organic Light-Emitting Diode display technology where each pixel emits its own light. This enables perfect blacks and very high contrast, at the cost of potential burn-in with static images over time.

RAM

Random Access Memory — the short-term working memory your device uses for active tasks. It does not store data when powered off. More RAM allows smoother multitasking.

SSD

Solid State Drive — a storage device using flash memory with no moving mechanical parts. Faster, quieter, and more shock-resistant than traditional hard disk drives.

USB-C

A small, reversible physical connector standard. The shape alone doesn't define speed or features — those depend on the protocol (USB 3.2, Thunderbolt 4, etc.) implemented over the connector.

mAh

Milliampere-Hour — a unit measuring battery capacity. A higher mAh rating means the battery holds more charge, though real-world battery life also depends on how efficiently the device uses power.

HDR

High Dynamic Range — a display standard that expands the visible range between the darkest shadows and brightest highlights in an image. Common formats include HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HLG.

ANC

Active Noise Cancellation — a technology that uses microphones to detect ambient sound and generates counteracting audio signals to reduce perceived noise. Quality varies widely between devices.

IP Rating

Ingress Protection rating — a standardized scale measuring a device's resistance to dust and water. The first digit rates dust protection; the second rates water resistance (e.g., IP68 = dust-tight and submersion-resistant).

NVMe

Non-Volatile Memory Express — a high-performance interface protocol for SSDs that communicates directly with the CPU, offering dramatically faster read/write speeds than older SATA-based SSDs.

Codec

HDMI 2.1
The latest mainstream HDMI version, supporting 4K at 120 Hz and 8K at 60 Hz, along with features like Variable Refresh Rate (VRR).
NFC (Near Field Communication)
A short-range wireless technology (a few centimeters) used for contactless payments, pairing, and data transfer.
5G
The fifth-generation cellular standard. Sub-6 GHz 5G offers broad coverage similar to 4G LTE; mmWave 5G provides much higher speeds but limited range.
LTE
Long Term Evolution — the 4G cellular standard. Widely available and sufficient for most mobile data tasks in areas without 5G coverage.
Ethernet

USB-C Does Not Equal USB Speed

The actual capabilities — speed, power delivery wattage, video output — depend entirely on the underlying protocol the manufacturer implemented. Audio Standards

Codec (Audio)

Driver (Speaker)

Fast Charging
