Walk into any tile or home improvement store and you'll encounter a wall of unfamiliar words: thinset, mastic, backerboard, sanded grout, rectified tile. Using the wrong material — even unintentionally — can lead to cracked tiles, failed adhesion, or grout that crumbles within months. Setting Materials: Adhesives and Mortars

The material that bonds tile to a surface is called the setting material. Choosing the right one depends on your tile type, substrate, and installation environment.

  • Thinset mortar: A cement-based adhesive mixed with water or a liquid latex additive. It's the standard choice for most tile installations, especially in wet areas like showers and floors. Available in gray and white; white is preferred under light-colored grout or glass tile.
  • Modified thinset: Thinset with polymer additives that improve flexibility and bond strength. Required for large-format tile and porcelain.

Substrate

Lippage

Rectified tile

Tile that has been mechanically cut to precise, uniform dimensions after kiln firing. Enables tighter grout joints and more consistent layouts than non-rectified tile.

Grout sealer

A penetrating or topical liquid applied to cured cement-based grout to resist staining and moisture infiltration. Epoxy and urethane grouts typically do not require sealing.

Grout: Types, Uses, and Joint Sizing

Grout fills the joints between tiles after they're set. The right grout type depends almost entirely on the width of your tile joints.

  • Sanded grout: Contains fine sand filler; used for joints wider than 1/8 inch. The sand prevents shrinkage cracking in wider gaps. Avoid using sanded grout on polished stone — the sand can scratch the surface.
  • Unsanded grout (non-sanded): A smooth cement-based grout for joints 1/16 to 1/8 inch wide. Preferred for glass tile, polished marble, and narrow mosaic joints.
  • Epoxy grout: Highly stain- and chemical-resistant; does not require sealing. More difficult to apply and clean up. A strong choice for kitchen countertops and commercial environments.
  • Urethane grout: A premixed, flexible grout that resists staining and doesn't require sealing. Easier to apply than epoxy but at a higher cost than cement-based grouts.
  • Grout haze: The thin film of dried grout residue left on the tile face after grouting. Removed with a damp sponge while fresh, or a grout haze remover once cured.

Always Seal Cement-Based Grout

Cement-based grouts — both sanded and unsanded — are porous and will absorb stains from cooking oils, wine, and cleaning products if left unsealed. Allow grout to cure fully (typically 72 hours minimum) before applying a penetrating grout sealer. Epoxy and urethane grouts are inherently non-porous and do not require sealing.

Substrates, Tools, and Key Layout Terms

The substrate is the surface you're tiling over. Tile can only perform as well as what's underneath it.

  • Cement board (backerboard): A rigid panel made of cement and fiberglass mesh. The standard substrate for wet areas — it won't swell or deteriorate from moisture the way drywall does.
  • Drywall (greenboard): Moisture-resistant drywall sometimes used in low-moisture wall applications. Not appropriate for showers or steam environments.
